Peterborough Cycling Club 2022 – Road Race Secretary Report.

2022 seemed to be a year of almost returning to normal post-Covid but not to the same levels of racing as were seen in 2019. There were not as many races on the calendar and some even had to be cancelled due to lack of entries.

The club still enjoyed some successes in open road races in 2022, with Harry Garfield being the top performer, winning one circuit race and numerous top ten finishes in road and circuit races saw him achieving his 2nd cat licence in his final year as a junior. Other riders getting results in open road races, mainly BMCR Masters events were Malcolm Smith, Jamie Murray and James Boardley.

The club promoted two open road races, firstly a round of the NCRA Handicap events in March which saw a full field of 60 competing and Malcolm Smith the best of the PCC riders in 5th place. Then in July we promoted the BMCR National Championships with 80 riders in the 60+ age categories competing for national jerseys on the tough Southwick circuit.

Of course none of these events can happen without the help of the club members doing their bit and helping out with marshalling, driving, HQ etc. There still seems to be some members who we never see helping out at the events though which puts more pressure on the organiser and the other members who do honour their club and do their bit, so please ensure you do your bit for the club and help us keep racing on the roads. Promoting events helps ensure our riders get entry into other races too. It is expected that every club member helps with at least one open event per year (with the exceptions of those members who are a bit too old for this).

Also, this year we have changed the club kit design and are using Kalas as our new supplier. There is still some stock kit available so if anyone needs any then let me know. We will put another order in this year for any items people need but we don’t have.

On a personal note, I have completed my training, which I started in 2018 before Covid, and am now qualified as a British Cycling Commissaire for open road races.
