Peterborough Riders Shine at Season Finales

5th November 2006

The cycle racing season has now drawn to an end, but not without some final great performances from Peterborough Cycling Club riders. Market Deeping's Brett Harwood has once again led the way, by teaming up with Maxey's Dave Yarham to win the Rutland CC Grand Prix de Gentleman 2-up time trial (one rider over 40) in a time of 53mins 36 secs. Brett has also had a fantastic finish to his road racing season. At the Hertfordshire Wheelers road race Brett broke clear with 3 other riders after only 20 miles and the 4 worked hard to stay clear of the rest of the field. As they headed into the finish of the 60 mile event, it could have been any of the 4 who took victory, but Brett surged ahead only to be pipped on the line by one of his rivals. At the Elizabethan CC road race Brett was joined by Peterborough's John French in a grueling 82 mile event near Wolverhampton. Both riders pulled out strong performances with John finishing 24th and Brett a fine 5th place. The club's evening 10 mile series was a run away win for Brett with 9 wins from 11 starts. The handicap competition however was a real cliff hanger, as Paul Stevenson went into the final event with a 5 point lead, only to have John Castleton take maximum points and the overall win. The final 2 events in the club championship were the hill climbs, with Jeremy Harrison winning the Rob Corrigan memorial cup and Simon Turner the Slater cup. The overall championship however was won by Andrew Alexander, due to a string of fine performances throughout the year, proving once again that consistency make a champion.
