2010 Sportives

A "warm-welcome" to the Sportive page.  New for 2010 Simon Hodson and Phil Cavanagh will be co-ordinating members' participation in sportive events.  We hope to encourage a fit and enthusiastic peloton of Peterborough Cycling Club members for the year ahead in local events, popular events across the UK and our overseas summer trips.  This year we visited Alpe D'Huez to take part in La Marmotte and thoughts are now moving to 2011 - if you have any ideas, or preferences - let us know.

New items;

1. Bourne Wheelers Sportive - entry is now closed at its max of 100 riders.

2. Sue Ryder - Ride For Rider - PCC Meet and Start times.

3. New training/recovery ride

Moving ahead, it seems that university boffins have now been well-rested over the summer as the word MAMIL's has now entered the English language - good news for some of us perhaps as we now know that our Wiggle Platinum club status isn't as unique (read - worrying) as we first thought - and we should gain comfort from such public awareness.  For anyone the right side of 40 - you too have comfort that you now know where you are heading; thereby giving you insight and direction.  Simple; WIN WIN. For more information go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10965608 and learn how you too can be a MAMIL.

If you would like to know more about Peterborough Cycling Club, or perhaps want to put your name down for any particular ride, let us know and we will do our best to co-ordinate some other riders to share the day, and perhaps the transport - and fuel bill !

If none of these are of interest, go to http://www.cyclosport.org and let us know which one you would like to do - and we'll add it to the list. Cyclo Sport lists many of the biggest sportives across the UK and the rest of Europe, and you can create your own log-in and diary page, and set yourself reminders to either enter a sportive - or count-down to training !!

Sunday 5th September - Bourne Wheelers Sportive - Now Full

Sorry guys and girls, this event is now closed to its limit of 100 riders with no entries on the day.

Sunday 5th September - Wild Eldric "NEW"

With new, revised routes for 2010, this great sportive tours the quiet coutryside of Shropshire. There are likley to be two routes on offer - 97 miles and 68 miles. http://www.kilotogo.com

Sunday 18th September NEW - Ride For Ryder

Great news - it's RYDER time again, and special thanks to PCC member Nick Smith for his efforts in assisting Sue Ryder in planning and checking the route - this will be another cracking ride, and therefore big thanks to Nick - "chapeau" - The distances are yet to be confirmed but last year the longest route was 84 miles.  Raise money for this local, worthy charity ride and enjoy another fantastic day on our best cycling roads.  Sue Ryder Foundation usually provides two feed stsations on the longest ride - great day for the semi-serious cyclist, or the shorter route would suit most leisure cyclists.  Look out for more details closer to the event, or go to http://www.surerydercare.org and go to Events.

*** NEW PCC start and meeting times *** - anyone wanting to join the longer 83 mile route - and start earlier in the first wave at 8am, we suggest meeting in the courtyard at the front of Thorpe Hall at 0730.  For those considering the shorter 53 mile route, look out for our Club Secretary Tim Cockerell - he will be at Thorpe Hall from 8am.  Tim intends to depart at around 0815.

Saturday 25th September - Tour of Dartmoor

Entries are now open for this popular event http://www.pendragon-cc.com

Sunday 26th September - Tour of Britain - Stoke On Trent

"Ride like a Pro ......  until you compare your time" - in September, in support of Prostate Cancer, you can ride three stages of the Tour of Britain route - new member Martin Atkinson rode this last year and would be delighted if we join him on the course in 2010. Go to  http://www.tourride.co.uk/There are 3 routes on offer for Stoke On Trent and keen cyclists will be attracted to either the 161km or 80 km - all routes starts from Stoke Football Club and according to Martin, you will find free car parking, mechanics, food - and a well oranised day with regular feed stations.  Start times are between 0800 and 1000 - £40 puts you on the start line - and be prepared for "initially rolling terain with long and steep hiils in the latter sections" - sounds like the place to be and in support of a worthy cause which hopefully none of us will need.  For more info Simon or Phil can direct questions to Martin.

Sunday 3rd October - The Rut (Rutland) "NEW"

This is a new sportive for Kilo To Go - for more information go to http://www.kilotogo.com - if you missed Ride For Ryder, why not use this sportive to raise some money for Sue Ryder !!

Saturday 30th October - Tour of The Peak 2010

2009 ..... best described as epic + very, very wet + very windy + poor visability - there were 2 routes last year, but most only completed the shorter 64 miles, as it was getting dark by 3pm which "scuppered" any hope of finishing the 96 mile route.  Last year was a lesson for many to ride within themselves, taking into consideration both the weather, and its' effect on the roads.  Top Tip from the Sportive team - "Lights and reflective/hi-viz clothing" ....... many didn't have either - but conditions throughout most of the day suggested they were basic essentials.  Let's hope for much better weather for 2010 - as many who climbed the famous Cat and Fiddle might as well have been on Level 10 on the turbo-trainer, in the garage - with the lights turned off - as far as I am concerned, I have no re-collection of being in Derbyshire in 2009 at all - a big shame - the scenery is stunnng (so I am told). go to http://www.kilotogo.com - this event is now open, so you can now put yourself through the same hopeless misery ....

Training Rides

If you are not sure whether you are quite ready for a big day in the saddle, and want to join us for our Saturday Early Birds Training Ride - Orton Mere at 0745 ***NEW NEW *** (0730 from 17th April)  for a 40 - 50 mile ride, averaging 18-20mph - the Saturday ride is going from strength to strength on almost a weekly basis.  Riders are now regularly averaging 20 per week.  As interest has grown the ride informally splits into two groups after about the firts 20 miles - Group One continues to average 18mph, while Group Two now often averages 20+mph - making it a great fitess tester.  Nick Smith is also often on-hand to provide informal coaching and tips for those really wanting to refine their endurance and technique. You can view our Saturday Training route on this link http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Early-Birds-Saturday-Training-Ride

On Sundays the Club Ride still starts from Cathedral Square at 0900 as it has done for decades.  The Club Ride is an excelllent social ride - great for new cyclists', or those returning to the sport - or simply just a great way to explore our local villages mainly via minor roads - this ride averages 14-15mph.  Join us in the Square at 0845, or in Cafe Nero from 0830 for a pre ride croissant and caffeine shot.  You will return back into Peterborough for around midday with several options to pull off early if time is a constraint, or if you have concerns over fitness.   However, the Club ride is traditionally paced for the slowest rider.

Terry Wright Cycles - Market Deeping 0930 - each Sunday riders meet in front of the shop to ride a 50-70 mile route which often heads further into Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.  The ride is renowned as a quick training ride - for more information speak with Paul Bonham at Terry Wright Cycles.

Sunday "Recovery" Ride - a new ride held on the first 2 Sundays of the month, this ride leaves from the village of Castor at 0800 and delivers you back in Peterborough for 1100.  Pace is between the Club Ride and a the Training Ride, therefore averaging 17/18mph.  Certainly informal - with a coffee and pastry stop en-route - this ride is ideal for the fitter cyclist looking for a gentle recovery ride, or a good but steady pace.  Distance is invariably around 50-55 miles and heads off into Rutland.

We look forward to seeing you in 2010.
