Double Win For Peterborough |
|
There was a double win for Peterborough Cycling Club this week, as both John French and Ian Wild took road race victories in the space of five days. The 90 km Welwyn Road Race on Sunday was a very fast race, despite the hilly course and hot temperatures and many riders were in trouble from the start. Special cash bonus primes through the race made it very hard to break clear of the main pack, but as they started the last of the six laps Peterborough CC's John French had escaped with two other riders. As the finish approached the main pack was chasing hard, but French was having none of it and lifted the pace again. The former Olympic speed skater and national cycling champion had made the pace hard enough to shed one of his companions and ensure either first or second at the finish. As the sprint started French timed his move to perfection to cross the line a length clear of his breakaway companion and take a great victory. Five days later French was in action again in the NCRA evening road race series and this time was joined by team mate Ian Wild from Deeping. With the handicapping spreading riders over several groups it was essential to start fast and keep the group working hard. Wild's group did just that until they caught the group in front. Realizing that this new larger group wasn't riding fast enough, Ian Wild put in an attack. He was pulled back by the chasing group, but the acceleration was enough to catch the group ahead and prevent the back groups, containing John French, from catching up. As the finish approached Wild, three times a series winner, placed himself perfectly and powered past his rivals to raise his arms in victory. | | | John French
