French & Harwood take honours

Peterborough Cycling Club’s John French has continued his recent run of success with two more victories.

John scored a great win at the Glendene road race at Thaksted two weeks ago and then lined up last weekend at the Milton Keynes Bowl, for the LVRC Criterium Championships. At about half distance a group of four riders broke clear and began to build up a lead. John however realized the danger and along with 4 other riders, bridged the gap to the leaders. This group worked well and it was soon obvious the winner would come from these riders. With three of the one kilometer circuits to go John made his move and this time no one could stay with him, as he stormed round to take a great solo victory.

Meanwhile, in time trialling, the first round of the Hereward league series turned out to be a real cliff hanger. The event pitches the local clubs, Peterborough, Bourne, Spalding and the Fenland Clarion against each other a series of events. The first was the Peterborough 10 mile event, which saw 75 riders taking part. In the end it was Peterborough CC’s Brett Harwood (from Deeping) who took the honours in 22 mins 49 secs, just 14 seconds ahead of Fenland’s Dave Langlands. Martin Jones took third for the Clarion with 23mins 12 secs, pushing Bourne’s Mark Botteley into fourth by a single second.

Peterborough Cycling Club also held their annual 25 mile open time trial at the weekend. The event was sponsored by Be-Well nutrition of Langtoft and was a great success. Sam Barker riding for Planet X won with 58 mins 19 secs, with Fenland Clarion’s Paul Asplin winning the handicap prize ahead of Peterborough CC’s John Dawson (from Grimsthorpe).
